What is this aux file?

File created by TeX and LaTeX, which are typesetting standards often used to generate academic papers and other technical documentation; contains information about a document such as footnotes, bibliography entries, and cross-references. AUX files are written when a .TEX file is typeset (formatted to an output document) by LaTeX. Since the generation of LaTeX documentation can take multiple passes before the document is complete (because of file and citation cross-referencing), the AUX file is used to store information between runs of the LaTeX compilation process.

What is this aux file?

Files with the .aux extension stand for "Auxiliary Target File." This file is a text editable files that houses information on a corresponding RAW file. There are more than one software applications that use .aux files. One of these is Geomatica, which is a mapping system software developed by PCI Geomatics. The software Geomatics features a database for storing in imagery using RAW files. AUX files save descriptions, like the data layout via interactive dialogs, and are saved in the same directory, along with the RAW image. This allows instant use of the same file name for reference purposes.Users of the mapping system software can also create AUX files using scripts. Georeferencing, a term used in projection mapping, along with other data, will be written onto a file with the .aux extension. This will also have the same name with the data file, but can be supplied with a different naming convention.AUX files are saved in a simple ASCII file, which is used to house a number of information about a specified target file. The generated files can contain image data types, except vectors, bitmaps, PCTs, and LUTs.Within an .aux file, a list of entry values and names are included; some of them are importantly named RawDefinition, ChanDefinition-1, and ChanDefinition-2.The RawDefinition of an AUX file is an entry that has three items as its value. These values are the lines, number of pixels, and bands, all of which describe the RAW file. The ChanDefinition entries describe the layout of the RAW file of a single channel. The -1, -2 or -n of the entry indicates which channel this information applies to.AUX files are created using the Liberian Algorithm, and can be safely deleted by the user if they are no longer in use.Aside from Geomatica, similar software called ERDAS Geospatial Imaging also uses files with the .aux extension. The AUX file holds metadata about an image in a raster file format. The metadata includes information about the images, image statistics, transformations, map coordinates, and so on.
