BIO files are mainly used by two software developers; the BioWare Corporation and IBM. The BioWare Corp’s Infinity Game Engine uses BIO files for game character biographies – these files can be edited with related game software. IBM uses the BIO extension to signify files that are used in Basic Input/Output Systems on computers running the OS/2 operating system. It is possible to edit IBM BIO files with the appropriate system software.
The BIO file extension provides the Basic Input/Output System, or BIOS, for machines running on the OS/2 operating system. The functions of the files with .bio extensions include preparing the machine and other software programs in the execution and the assumption of control of the PC. Additionally, the basic tasks of files with the file extension .bio can be referred to as booting up, which is the shortened term for bootstrapping. The OS/2 operating system (Operating System/2), in which the file extension BIO normally resides, was intended to serve as a protected mode successor of PC-DOS and Microsoft Windows. The platform was initiated by Microsoft and IBM, and was later developed solely by IBM. However, OS/2 operating systems are no longer marketed and have been discontinued in the later parts of the year 2006. In many aspects, the OS/2 operating system is comparable to Windows, although it also bears similarities with the UNIX and Xenix operating systems.Files with the .bio file extension typically activate when the computer is turned on. After initialization, the file extension BIO initiates a number of motherboard elements and peripherals, such as the clock generator, processors and caches, the chipset, system memory, PCI devices, graphics controller, storage controllers, and other I/O controllers. The three kinds of memory, from which files with the .bio extension initiate, are PROM, EPROM, or flash memory. After initializing the mentioned components, the BIO file extension finally loads the boot loader used by the OS/2 operating system and transfers control to it. After initializing the system memory, the file extension BIO copies or decompresses the BIOS function into that memory and continues on executing from it.
