The LHA file extension is a compression format widely used in Japan. Haruyau Yoshizaki developed it in 1988. The LHARC compression is very popular with Amiga Computers and is used by id Software for the data compression of installation files for games like Quake and Doom series. The LHA file extension is now embedded into Microsoft Windows operating systems XP Professional and Home Edition, and Vista, and acts as the main compression agent of the system. Its known application execution file is "lha.exe" or "lha255b.exe".The latest version of the LHARC compression agent is now LHZ, with its 5-byte text string to be used in compression; but LHA is still being widely used, especially in Japan. The LHA compression used a 256Kb text string, to be utilized when the compression is initiated. The length of the string will determine how small the file will become after the compression is finished. The lower the size of the text string, the smaller the size of the file after compression. The speed of compression is also affected according to the number of text strings used during the process.Aside from being used as the main compression agent for most games today, the LHA file extension, with some variations, is now being embedded into the functionality of programming languages to reduce the size of applications (to let it execute faster in the system). Libraries are now available to incorporate LHA file extension compressed files into programming languages, like C, C++, and so on.Also, other compression software like WinZip and WinRAR now incorporate the LHA compression algorithm and can be used to open compressed files with the LHA file extension.
