The files with the .raw file extension are digital photography's "digital negatives". This is the equivalent of chemical photography's "film negatives". These files contain "raw" (unprocessed, untouched) pixel information straight from the image sensor of a digital camera or image scanner, serving the same purpose as a film negative in film photography.Files with the .raw file extension only contain values of one red, green or blue at each pixel location. This is because they still have to undergo several processes, each of which containing different irreversible image adjustments, even before they can be developed into their final full color image files. The steps are the following:* White balance and Demosaicing - involves the interpretation and conversion of the so-called Bayer array towards an image with all the three colors (Red, Green, and Blue) at every pixel. The so-called Bayer array makes the first image appear more pixilated than the other two giving a greenish tint. White Balance involves the removal of unrealistic colorcasts so that images that appear white in person are rendered white in the photo.* Tone Curves - involves the processes of contrast, color saturation and sharpening of the images to offset the softening caused by demosaicing.* High bit depth compression - involves conversion into 8-bits per channel and compression into JPEG. Higher bit depth allows decreasing the susceptibility to posterization and increasing the flexibility to color space and in post-processing.Files with the .raw file extension can store a lot of information such as variations and ranges in color and detail, which results to the less visibility of artifacts and increase of the exposure to an under-exposed image. This allows more scope for corrections and manipulations, and improvement of photo quality by tweaking the camera settings for white balance, color saturation, contrast, and sharpness. The best part about saving images with the RAW file extension is that once all the metadata have been saved, tit can consist of more information aside from the actual converted results, which always remain exactly as it was saved. Thus, this is either via compression or otherwise,It is not easy to correctly give a description of files with the .raw file extension as each camera manufacturer uses its own proprietary RAW file extension. Different manufacturers do this in order to make their files inaccessible to other manufacturers. Only Panasonic uses the RAW file extension for its native format.
Uncompressed PCM (pulse code modulation) signed audio data file; contains raw audio data stored in a binary format; does not contain any header information or use an audio codec. Raw file can contain audio in any codec but is usually used with PCM audio data. It is rarely used except for technical tests.
