Files with the RLE extension identify a Run Length Encoded Bitmap image that has been encoded using a 4 or 8 bit format. RLE files are device independent image files that are encoded and compressed using the Run-Length encoding process. RLE files can be opened and edited using compatible software tools.
Files or documents with such an extension can use the program ADEX Corporation Chromagraph series of graphics ca opened or processed.
The Utah RLE format was developed by Spencer Thomas at the University of Utah Department of Computer Science. The first version appeared around 1983. The Utah RLE format was developed mainly to support the Utah Raster Toolkit, which is widely distributed in source form on the Internet. The default extension for Utah RLE files is RLE.
